With a specific remote computer management program, a 29-year-old manviolated the personal data of young women and blackmailed them.
The case of violation of privacy, personal data and intrusion into the computer systems of internet users was investigated by the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate, while a regular procedure file was filed against the 29-year-old perpetrator, who has been involved in a similar case in the past.
The 29-year-old used a profile on a social networking website, with the aim of illegally gaining access to computer systems and personal data of third parties, while approaching young girls, mainly students.
Using this method, he managed to convince at least six women to allow him access, via a special remote management program, to the files on their personal computers, from where he retrieved and copied a wealth of their personal data, in digital files (photos, videos, etc.). In another case, he attempted to gain access using the same tactic, but was unsuccessful.
His modus operandi was to send friend requests to his victims, as well as to their online friends.
Posing as a graduate student, he falsely told them that as part of his thesis, it was necessary to remotely "check" various personal computers to determine whether they were infected with malware or viruses, with the aim of testing the power and effectiveness of a new anti-virus program.
After convincing his victims, he then asked them to install a specific remote management program on their computer, with which he gained, without their knowledge, full access to their computer systems, and then retrieved and copied a wealth of their personal data (digital files).
The methodical police online investigation revealed the 29-year-old's involvement in the case.
This morning, police officers from the Cybercrime Investigation Directorate conducted a lawful search of the 29-year-old's home in Athens and, following the on-site digital investigation by specialized police officers, his participation in the case was confirmed, while a laptop and two other touch-screen laptops (tablets) were found and seized, which will be sent to the Criminal Investigation Directorate for the necessary laboratory tests.
It is noted that a case has been filed against the 29-year-old by the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate for related criminal acts and he was arrested within the limits of the autophoric procedure, while his involvement in other similar criminal acts is being investigated.
Also, the case file will be submitted to the Athens First Instance Prosecutor.
