Mozilla plans to integrate new notifications into the Firefox browser that will inform users if add-ons that may slow down the system.
This feature, similar to what Microsoft added to its own browser, Internet Explorer, monitors the performance of add-ons in the browser. If an add-on crosses a certain threshold, a warning will appear in the Firefox interface.
The warning notification will state that “[add-on name] may make [Firefox version] run slowly.” The add-on name in this case is the name of the add-on that will also appear in the Firefox Add-ons Manager.
Three action buttons will appear in the notification area:
- Disable the add-on – this disables the add-on and works similarly to manually disabling it from the browser's Add-ons Manager.
- Ignore – will do nothing for now. It is possible that warning messages will appear again at a later point in time.
- Permanently Ignore – no more warnings appear and they do nothing.
It should be noted that the feature has just been released in the Nightly of Firefox, and that it will take several updates before it is released in the stable version.
Considering that Mozilla browser users install more add-ons than Internet Explorer users, on average, warnings will appear more frequently to users of the former browser. If the user has many add-ons, he will be bombarded with several warnings from the beginning, so he will have to make the appropriate settings from his browser menu.
