A group of hackers managed to steal money from Standard Chartered bank accounts through the bank's ATMs in Pakistan
Recently, Standard Chartered Bank customers in Pakistan received transactionvia email and SMSinforming them of a debit of Rs.50,000. ($500) from their bank accounts.
The problem is that hackers stole money from bank accounts without the knowledge of the bank's customers. Some of the customers have not even received any notification yet, but only discovered the theft when they tried to withdraw money from the bank's ATMs and the machines refused to dispense cash because their debit cards and accounts had been blocked.
Although there is no official data on the exact number of victims, the number of customers affected could be very large, since security experts report that a huge amount of money was transferred from Pakistani ATMs to England, within a matter of seconds.
According to the initial investigation, hackers targeted ATMs from England and the Bank informed customers that the online system may have been attacked, but assured that the stolen money. The real problem for customers is the note released by the bank, informing them that the refund of the money will take some time.
In response to the attack, the Bank blocked customers' credit cards, but the hackers had already transferred money from Pakistan to England by accessing debit card data through ATMs.
