Windows 10 will support biometric "password killers"

At the Stanford Cybersecurity Summit on Friday, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 will support the next version of the Fast Identification Online (FIDO) specification, which will allow devices to work with a wide range of biometric readers and provide hardware with the right framework to build and integrate additional security features into phones, devices or laptops.

Soon, users will be able to sign in to Outlook using a fingerprint sensor or iris scanner.
Unlike today's fingerprint readers, the FIDO standard was designed to completely replace passwords, with a focus on faster and more localized methods of authentication. In a post on the company's official blog accompanying the announcement, Microsoft's Dustin Ingalls says that moving beyond passwords was "one of the top priorities for us here at Microsoft.".

The open standard FIDO has been endorsed by some of the biggest companies in the technology and banking sectors, including Microsoft, Google, PayPal, and Bank of America. The system was designed to protect biometric data, with iris scans or fingerprints being authenticated locally and not exposed to the web.

The first version of the specification (Version 1.0) was released in January, and companies like Yuboco have already started building hardware that uses FIDO to sign in to Google. Windows 10 support is tied to version 2.0 of the FIDO standard, to which Microsoft has also contributed.
