Researchers claim to have found a direct link between the anger some people express through social media and the occurrence of heart disease.
The election season has come to an end, leaving behind, among other things, countless verbal confrontations, from the neighborhood coffee shop and the workplace to social media.
However, as researchers from the University of Pennsylvania argue, an aggressive or angry tweet fill us with satisfaction, but that doesn't mean it's good for the heart. On the contrary, it seems that any such message may satisfy our desire to respond or externalize the disagreement or anger we feel about someone or something, but it may hide deeper problems.
Researchers claim to have found a direct link between the anger some people display on timelines and the occurrence of heart disease, which can be fatal.
Analyzing tweets from two years (2009 and 2010), researchers concluded that among users who used aggressive language and often words that even suggest hatred, the rate of deaths from heart disease is higher than average. On the contrary, it seems that those who are milder in their expressions and publications face a lower risk.
"Hostility and depression have been linked to heart disease at the individual level through biological effects," said Margaret Kern, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Melbourne, who helped with the study.
"Expressed negative emotions may also be linked to certain behaviors. These people are more likely to drink, eat poorly, and isolate themselves from others, reactions that may indirectly lead to heart disease," the professor added
