Although the software used by North Koreans once resembled Windows, it now resembles Apple, with some researchers finding serious security flaws in its structure.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un could be described as a fan of Apple products , judging by the current appearance of the operating system of the computers that serve the country's state machinery.
Red Star OS – as it is known – in its latest version has been leaked for the first time and is now available for download via torrent clients and some sites. However, some researchers warn that it is not suitable for installation (the available 2.6 Gb file is in the form of an .ISO image), since they have already identified serious security vulnerabilities in its structure.
The development of this operating system began in 2002. It is estimated that it is used in public service systems, military and other critical infrastructure and generally on computers with Internet access. It is based on Linux and in its initial version was a variant of the Red Hat distribution. Red Star OS is the result of the North Koreans' effort to create their own operating system that would provide them with better protection against potential cyber attacks.

In its early versions, the user interface resembled that of Windows (then XP). It is estimated that during the days of Kim Jong-un, its appearance changed. Today, in version 3.0 Desktop, Red Star OS resembles a clone of the Mac operating system, OS X.

However, anonymous researchers, after examining the North Korean operating system, noticed serious security flaws in its structure. Someone with the nickname “Hacker Fantastic” reported in a publication that he had identified a gap that could allow unauthorized access. The same security flaw had been found and fixed years ago in some Linux distributions.
