The iGuide service "discovers unexplored" Greece by offering guided tours to areas of the country where access to information for the public is not easy.
The platform was developed by Mobics and Innoetics , as well as the research and educational institution Athens Information Technology (AIT). iGuide features synthetic speech for automatic narration, personalized guided tours, offline maps, and 3D representations of places and relics.
"The Thrace region is a classic example, where visiting places of cultural value and natural beauty is not accompanied by sufficient information for the visitor. This is why the development of iGuide began," said Professor Christodoulos Hamzas, scientific director and coordinator of the project "iGuide: Socially Enriched Mobile Tourist Guide for Unexploited Cultural and Natural Monuments".
"This is a system that aims to provide socially enriched electronic tourist services that the visitor can use through his mobile phone. The proposed system will be able to serve a much larger range of places and attractions than existing solutions," the professor added.
"The main areas of application of the i Guide are unguarded archaeological sites, areas of natural beauty and places of cultural value, where basic information is not provided or what is provided is not directly accessible to visitors," he concluded.
The iGuide is expected to be available on the market in spring 2015. The program will cover the areas of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (Nestos Delta, Alykes of Thasos, Maroneia, Avdira, Old Town of Xanthi, etc.). The iGuide will be available in three languages, Greek, English and Bulgarian.
The application is being developed within the framework of the homonymous iGuide project, co-financed by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology and the European Union (Program "Cooperation 2011"), coordinated by the Xanthi Speech Processing Institute, with the participation of the companies Vodafone and Riverland and the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
