FireEye: Research into Internet security issues revealed the existence of a ring that was extracting corporate secrets with the aim of manipulating stock markets.
According to cybersecurity firm FireEye, the ring had hacked into the accounts of more than 100 companies, the majority of which were in the pharmaceutical industry.
Fire Eye declined to name the companies that fell victim to the scheme, and it is not clear how the information was used in financial transactions. “They were looking to obtain sensitive information that would give them an advantage in upcoming stock market fluctuations,” said Fire Eye executive Jed Winton. Their victims range from small to very large companies. Among the information they obtained through their cyber intrusions were merger documents, legal cases, business development plans, research results, and more.
