Twitter will begin tracking and collecting data about apps installed on mobile devices, in an effort to better target ads and content to users.
"We collect and update the list of apps installed on your mobile device so we can deliver tailored content that may be of interest to you," Twitter said in a blog post on Wednesday.
Only lists of applications are collected, without controlling their use by device owners, Twitter 's offices in San Francisco point out.
The types of applications that users have on their phones and tabletswill be used for purposes such as who they would like to “follow” on the service, as well as for advertisements with similar content.
Twitter users can disable the feature.
Users can of course prevent this from happening by enabling the “Limit Ad Tracking” or “Opt Out of Interest-Based Ads” feature on Apple and Android devices, respectively. When this system is activated, all users will be notified via the app, until then Twitter officially states that it does not collect any data from mobile users’ apps.
