On Thursday, November 13th in Munich, Hackaday.com announced that SatNOGS is the grand winner of the international competition “The Hackaday Prize”.
Hackaday.com is a website that presents daily creative examples of the use of technology, while the grand prize of the competition is a trip to space or the sum of $200,000.
Over eight hundred teams participated in the “ The Hackaday Prize ” competition with the aim of creating interconnected, open-design devices, and the final selection of the competition winners was made by nine judges with extensive experience in creating electronic devices
The development of SatNOGS began in April 2014 at hackerspace.gr, a space dedicated to creative code hacking and construction, in Athens.
The goal of SatNOGS is to create a global network of satellite ground stations that will be able to share satellite and publish the recordings in a combined manner, which will result in a dramatic increase in the communication coverage of low-orbit satellites and at the same time increase the efficiency of their telecommunications capabilities through the use of common infrastructures.
The main development team of SatNOGS consists of 10 people, but beyond them, a significant part of its development is based on a global community that participates in the development and creation of SatNOGS ground stations by examining alternative materials and participating in software development.
After their distinction in the Hackaday competition, the creators of SatNOGS intend to continue its development, and to assist those who wish to build ground stations to interconnect with the SatNOGS network.
