Edit text files, spreadsheets and presentations in Word, Excel and PowerPoint, at no additional cost
As announced by Microsoft, Office will now be available for free for iOS and Android devices.
Thus, users of Apple's iPad and iPhone , as well as other tablets and smartphones with Google's operating system, will be able to create and edit text files, spreadsheets and presentations in Word, Excel and PowerPoint respectively, at no additional cost. Until recently, full use of the corresponding applications was possible through a subscription to the Office 365.
Following the recent announcements of a strategic partnership with Dropbox, the cloud storage and content management service, this move marks Microsoft's substantial shift towards providing free software, and in particular through a product that until a few years ago was one of its main sources of revenue.
The free version of Office for iPad and iPhone is available immediately. The version for Android is currently in preview and is expected to be fully available next year.
