Photographer Babycakes Romero observed people of all ages and social classes, in all places, and found that instead of talking or keeping any contact, they are lost in smartphones.
“It was something I saw every day. It was firsthand,” the photographer told BuzzFeed News, commenting on his photo series titled The “Death Of Conversation.” “
I saw that smartphones had become a wall to communication between people. I thought people were using them as a social activity to hide their awkwardness, to cover up their silence. But as I continued to research and photograph this modern phenomenon, I realized that these devices are what are causing the awkwardness and the silence,” he adds.
"Mobile phones allow people to withdraw rather than commit. When I told these people that I was photographing them, they didn't even seem present in the real world. They were immersed in an artificial world that they had created themselves.
I have nothing against technology, but I think it is starting to affect human cohesion and we need to learn when to turn it off or else we will completely shut ourselves off from others," the artist says.
