The University of Athens (UAE) will gradually begin offering massive open online courses , following the example of many internationally renowned higher education institutions.
The term "Open Course" refers to free access to the course environment with enriched multimedia content (slides, notes, videos, podcasts, interactive content) and to its educational material.
This action is implemented at a national -horizontal- level by the civic non-profit company "Academic Internet" ("Gunet"), in which all academic institutions in the country participate. The corresponding vertical action "Open Academic Courses" at the University of Athens aims at the development of open digital courses, available free of charge to both students of the University of Athens and the general public.

The University of Athens (NKUA) recalls in a relevant announcement that for 11 years it has developed an Asynchronous Distance Learning platform (https://eclass.uoa.gr/), which supports a total of 4,672 courses and 130,653 users.
