The FBI has created a public "web portal" for malware analysis, which was previously for private use, with the aim of helping to speed up incident response and, by extension, will assist authorities with investigations.
G-men hope that the Malware Investigator portal can help businesses cope with new malware, without excessive efforts and research.
The head of the Information Unit, Steve Pandelides, stated at the launch of the web portal that it will benefit the organization and the private sector.
Windows malware submitted to the portal will be correlated with other FBI alerts and investigations to produce reports. It will also expand to cover other types of viruses.
Malware will be partially analyzed through fuzzy hashing including section hashing, virus detection, filtering, and more.
The organization opened API access to organizations seeking to integrate the system into their platforms and maintained that personal information submitted would remain confidential.
The FBI began manually analyzing malware in 1998 and over the years created systems to store and examine viruses, trojans, worms, and bots. The process was automated in 2011 with Malware Investigator.
