Some users ' Facebook feeds may have been infected by a message sent by a friend or known as an update about a video with the last words of famous Filipino actor Mark Gil.
Gil, whose real name is Raphael Joseph De Mesa Eigenmann, passed away on September 1st and cybercriminals quickly invented a scam that exploits the unfortunate incident in order to help them spread malware.
The message that is purported to offer the actor's final words, which are said to have been recorded on video. The same sense of urgency for the user to click the link has spread through messages that have been designed to support the scam, known as click-baiting.
According to Jovi Umawing from Malwarebytes, clicking on the supposed video to watch it leads to potentially unwanted applications (PUAs/AIX).
Umawing says that the samples that were analyzed have been detected by their systems as PUP.Optional.InstallBrain.A. Users are advised to monitor the news increasingly, especially when it involves popular individuals.
