Five popular router models were hacked during the hacking competition, SOHOpelessly Broken, held as part of the DEFCON 22 security conference.

The contestants were asked to hack 10 router models from different manufacturers, specifically: Linksys EA6500, ASUS RT-AC66U, TRENDnet TEW-812DRU, Netgear CENTRIA WNDR4700, Netgear WNR3500U / WNR3500L, TP-Link TL-WR1043ND, D-Link DIR-865L, Belkin N900 DB and the Open Wireless Router firmware developed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF).
The competition featured four contestants who reported a total of 15 zero-day vulnerabilities. Eleven of the reported vulnerabilities were submitted by Craig Young, a security researcher at Tripwire.
The vulnerabilities identified were not all critical, and in some cases competitors had to combine several of them to achieve a full breach and gain control of the devices.
A total of seven attacks resulted in full breaches, and these involved the routers , as well as an Actiontec Electronics router, provided to Verizon Communications customers.
The Actiontec router was not initially selected for the competition, but participated exceptionally, following a competitor's request
