The seemingly simple, yet pioneering and practical idea of two medical students from Australia won first place in the Imagine Cup, Microsoft's global innovation competition.

The Eyenaemia app is an easy-to-use tool that allows anyone to examine themselves, estimating the chances of having anemia. Just a selfie-type photo of the eye, taken with the mobile phone camera. The app analyzes the visual result, examining the color deviation of the lower eyelid from normal.

The 22-year-old Imagine Cup winners, Jennifer Tang and Jarrel Seah, are students at the University of Melbourne and their idea is being clinically tested in two hospitals in the Australian city.

This year, more than 14,000 student teams from around the world took part in the Imagine Cup, and 34 teams from the same number of countries participated in the final phase. From Greece, the Genesis team, consisting of Iordanis Kantharidis, Manos Hadjiioannou, Panos Karampelas and Kostas Dokos, had qualified and competed in Seattle – where Microsoft is headquartered. The Greek team participated in the games category, with “Dementia – Tales of Blackthorn Manor”, an online strategy game.

Cyprus was also present at this year’s finals, winning the “Facebook Creativity” prize, with the proposal Ladybag. This is a smart solution aimed at reducing electricity consumption, through a system of direct monitoring and control of electrical appliances. The Cypriot team consists of University of Nicosia students Gregory Vishnumolakala, Pooya Charmarai Tohidi, Seyed Hessan Adnani Hosseini and Ali Tayari.

“What excites me is that we live in a time when we can imagine the impossible and make it possible,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, presenting the first prize to the team from Australia. “The great thing about young and innovative creators is that they see things that the rest of us can’t,” Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said in a video message broadcast on the day of the awards ceremony.

The three winning teams from the individual categories of the competition qualified for the final round. Along with the team from Australia (winner in the Citizenship category), the teams from Russia (Games) and New Zealand (Innovation) competed for the grand prize.
