Windows XP may no longer be a supported operating system, but that doesn't mean Redmond is indifferent or doesn't care about it anymore.
In fact, Microsoft oversees everything related to XP, so it recently decided to launch a legal battle against a Minnesota-based company that was selling pirated copies of the old operating system.
According to court documents, Microsoft filed a lawsuit against Ocean Enterprises and its owner, Alex Sumetsky, for selling computers running unauthorized copies of Windows XP.
“The computers sold by the defendants had illegal copies of Microsoft software installed on them.”
“The defendants advertised, marketed, installed, offered and distributed unauthorized copies of Microsoft software, infringing Microsoft’s intellectual property rights and/or its trademark.”.
Microsoft had contacted the company, warning it that the copies of Windows XP being sold were not genuine, but Ocean Enterprises continued to sell computers with illegal software, even after receiving the relevant notifications.
“The defendants advertised that the computers they sold had Microsoft software pre-installed.”
"With their advertisements, the defendants infringe and/or violate Microsoft's copyrights, advertising ideas, business style, slogans and/or the company's trademark," the indictment states.
