Security researchers have identified a new scam on Facebookthat targets unsuspecting users of the social network by using a gruesome video as a bait. The video supposedly shows a woman being brutally killed in a fight.
Scammers invoke, as a standard tactic, the curiosity of users, who cannot resist the temptation and try to view the video in any way possible.
When potential victims click on the link contained in the malicious posts, they are taken to a new page, identical to the one on Facebook. Of course, with a closer look at the page's URL, users can see that it is not a genuine page on the social network.
Victims are then asked to share the post and complete a survey in order to gain access to the video in question. In this way, the scammers ensure the spread of the campaign, while for each survey that is completed, they receive a financial benefit.
Researchers advise users to be particularly wary of such posts that promise access to outrageous content, as most of them are part of a well-designed scam.
