According to the new "June 2014 Top 500" list of the world's fastest supercomputers , 97% of the systems run Linux, the open source operating system that has slowly managed to eliminate all its competitors.
More specifically, 485 of the world's 500 fastest systems are based on Linux, a percentage that corresponds to 97 percent of the top supercomputers.
As for the rest of the supercomputers on the list, 13 of them run Unix, specifically the IBM AIX operating system, since they all have IBM Power processors. The fastest of them, ECMWF, which is used by a British research center for seasonal weather forecasting, ranks 60th in the world.
Two Windows supercomputers are also on the list. The best of them, ranked 294th, is located at the Shanghai Supercomputer Center.
