Computer users cite security risks from malware as the top reason for not using illegal software. Among their concerns are hacker attacks and data loss. However, 62% of software installed on personal computers in Greece in 2013 was not properly licensed.

These and other findings published in the BSA Global Software Survey highlight the need for effective software management practices, particularly in the enterprise.

The survey is conducted biennially for BSA by IDC, which this year surveyed computer users in 34 markets, including approximately 22,000 home and business PC users and more than 2,000 IT executives.

Among the findings are:
-The percentage of PC software installed without proper licensing in Greece was 62% in 2013, marginally up 1% from 2011. The commercial value of this illegal software amounts to 220 million dollars.

-The main reason why computer users around the world choose not to use illegal software is to avoid security threats from malware. Among the risks associated with illegal software, 64% of users cite unauthorized access by hackers as a primary concern and 59% data loss.

-Only 35% of companies worldwide have a clear policy requiring the use of properly licensed software.
