Tax evasion from piracy is estimated at 78 million euros, while there are more than 2.5 million users of websites distributing music tracks and films, as has emerged from the investigations recently conducted by the Cybercrime Prosecution Service.
A recent case is the arrest in the Piraeus area of a website administrator through which audiovisual works, such as films, television series and music, were distributed without paying the relevant royalties.
In particular, the electronic investigation conducted digitally identified a website through which musical creations and audiovisual works were distributed without paying the relevant intellectual property rights.
A digital investigation followed, through which the website administrator and his place of residence were identified. The legal investigation, in the presence of a judicial officer, carried out by a police team, at the perpetrator's home, established that he has the rights to manage the website and was arrested in the context of the immediate proceedings.
During the investigation, an internal computer disk was found and seized, which will be sent for examination to the Hellenic Police's Forensic Laboratory Directorate.
Furthermore, the digital investigation revealed that the perpetrator was managing thousands of online users, who had access to hundreds of thousands of audiovisual files (music, films, etc.), which he possessed illegally, without the required permission of the legal holders of the relevant intellectual property rights, as well as related rights of member companies of the Society for the Protection of Audiovisual Works.
Through this activity, the website administrator was gaining significant financial benefits, amounting to hundreds of thousands of euros, for which further investigation is being conducted at a financial and tax level.
The arrested person, with the case file filed against him, was taken to the Piraeus First Instance Prosecutor.
