Computer input devices are well-known sources of germs. However, American technology company Interface has a solution: antimicrobial keyboards and mice made of copper.
According to the Infection Control Today report,1 inanimate objects can act as a source of infection, with one hand depositing germs that can then be transferred to the other, which can lead to potential infection. Some of the most common and common surfaces in the healthcare field are computer mice and keyboards. The report cites several studies linking these devices to the spread of infections.
Copper is naturally antimicrobial, meaning it instantly kills bacteria and viruses that come into contact with it. In fact, it shares these properties with many alloys—such as brass and bronze—a family of metals known as “antimicrobial copper.” Hospitals have already begun replacing high-touch surfaces like faucets, doorknobs, and light switches with antimicrobial copper. Other areas where the spread of infection is a risk, such as airports, schools, and childcare facilities, are also seeing a growing shift toward copper-based surfaces. Now, workplaces are following suit.

OIT has been offering antimicrobial keyboards made of copper for some time (and these have been used by facilities like Jorvi Hospital in Finland) and now they have begun launching companion USB mice.
In a clinical trial of copper antimicrobial surfaces, three US hospitals replaced just six high-touch surfaces in intensive care units—including computer input devices—with antimicrobial surfaces made of copper. The result was a 58% reduction in patient risk of potential healthcare-associated infection.
