Facebook has announced an advanced form of targeted advertising, taking advantage of the data it collects from its users' online habits.
Until now, Facebook has only shared with advertisers the data it collects from its users' activity on the platform. But that's changing, and in the coming weeks the social networking service will start handing over to advertisers the data it collects from users' activity outside of Facebook.
This will be achieved through external applications and sites that users visit within Facebook, with this change starting in the US.
For example, upon visiting a site about books, Facebook will start showing ads about books.
It sounds alarming and most people fear that they are being monitored, which is why Facebook will give everyone the opportunity to unsubscribe from this service, while users will also be able to mute ads that do not concern them through special menus and change their privacy settings.
According to the social network's announcement, this change will become visible to international audience in the coming months.
