Photo filters are now just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to editing images on Instagram.
The photo-sharing service announced 10 new editing tools on Tuesday for both iOS and Android. In addition to new settings like contrast, brightness, and saturation, Instagram’s filters have also been revamped. Users can now adjust the intensity of the filter with a slider.
Instagram launched the slider in March with its Lux tool, which serves as a subtle light “fill” for dark photos. This slider is now available in a number of editing modes, giving users more control over how their changes appear .
The company has been building the new suite of tools for six months. For some tools, such as the vignette that affects the lighting around the edges of an image, engineers at Instagram studied film cameras to determine how light bends through different lenses, an Instagram spokesperson said.
The full list of editing tools includes Adjust (allows you to crop and straighten photos at the same time), brightness, contrast, warmth, saturation, highlights, shadows, vignette, sharpen, and filter strength (the border tool is now inside filter strength).
More editing tools on Instagram are “on the way,” although the spokesperson didn’t say specifically. They’ll be added to the app when they’re ready. Instagram expects the new editing tools to be available to iOS and Android users as app updates begin rolling out to the App Store and Google Play Store.
