It's an open secret that racial and gender discrimination occurs in large multinational companies, yet no company has ever come out to openly admit it. Now, for the first time, Google is breaking the taboo and admitting one of its biggest social mistakes.
Whether out of a sincere intention to correct the problem, or out of overconfidence and disregard for the consequences, Google has publicly admitted that its management discriminates.
Specifically, as reported in a relevant article in the newspaper Vima, of the employees employed by Google in the US, approximately 70% are men and 61% of all men and women are white.
As the company's vice president Laszlo Bock stated, "to put it simply, Google is very far from its goal, which is a company with a diversified workforce."
In fact, the relevant report provides more details about the composition of the entire workforce: Among engineers, only 17% are women, while the percentage of whites reaches 60%. As for managerial positions, the percentages are even more disappointing, since only 21% of managers are women and only 28% are people of color or Latino.
However, in order to apologize, the company indirectly blames the American education system, since only 18% of female graduates in the US have a degree in computer science, while the percentage for people of color and Latinos drops to 5%.
