Researchers have discovered new malware that has infected Android and disables infected mobile phones until their users pay a large sum in order to avoid criminal prosecution for viewing illegal pornography.
To fuel fear to the fullest, Android-Trojan.Koler.A uses location features to tailor warnings based on the country the user resides in. For example, for users residing in the US, the alert appears to come from the FBI.
The malware blocks users from accessing their phones' home screens, making it impossible to use most of the apps installed on the phone. In some cases, normal phone functions can only be restored after the user pays a "fine" of around $300, via hard-to-detect services like Paysafecard or Ukash.
