Despite pressure from the Federal Trade Commission, Facebook is unlikely to leave WhatsApp's strict privacy policies intact after government regulators approved its $19 billion acquisition.
Last week, Jessica Rich, director of the FTC (Bureau of Consumer Protection), sent a letter to Facebook, warning the social network that it should comply with the privacy protections that WhatsApp to users of its instant messaging service.
The letter said: “WhatsApp has made some promises about the limited nature of the data it collects, retains, and shares with third parties – promises that go beyond the protections Facebook currently promises its users. We want to make it clear that, regardless of its acquisition, WhatsApp should continue to honor these promises to consumers.”
