Brendan Eich donated $1,000 in 2008 to the campaign to draft a law against same-sex marriage
The resignation of the CEO of Mozilla, best known for Firefox, was announced in a blog post by executive chairman Mitchell Baker.
Brendan Eich, one of the company's co-founders and the creator of the Java programming language, donated $1,000 to the campaign to pass a law against same-sex marriage in California in 2008. The law was eventually passed until it was overturned in 2013 by the U.S. Supreme Court.
His appointment as CEO only on March 24th had caused a lot of reactions both inside and outside Mozilla, with three members of the Board resigning a few days later, although the company does not link the two events.
For her part, in her post, Baker apologized for the company not responding immediately to the reactions and being slow to "listen" to the complaints.
