Nearly 35 million Americans used Instagram at least once a month last year, compared to 30.8 million who used Twitter
Instagram has overtaken Twitter to become the most popular among smartphone users in the US, highlighting the rise of the photo-sharing app as it makes a bold move into the advertising industry.
Mark Zuckerberg announced this week that Instagram has hit 200 million monthly active users worldwide and has grown more than sixfold since he acquired it in 2012.
Twitter, however, has a larger desktop user base, with 240 million monthly active users. Nearly 35 million Americans used Instagram at least once a month last year, compared with 30.8 million who used the Twitter app, according to estimates from research firm E-Marketer.
At the same time, Instagram has also helped Facebook retain the young audience that has grown tired of this social network.
Instagram recently enabled paid ads and has been slowly building its presence in the advertising market. The first ad ran late last year and this month it announced a deal with Omnicom, its first partnership with an advertising agency.
