Google has announced improved encryption for its Gmail email service to protect users from government spying. The company has completely removed the ability to disable HTTPS.
So, starting today, the service will always use an encrypted HTTPS connection by default when you check or send emails. Additionally, Google assured that every email from today will be encrypted as it travels within the company's data centers.
“Today’s change means that no one will be able to see your messages as they travel between you and our servers – it doesn’t matter if you’re using public WiFi or connecting from your computer, phone or tablet,” Nicolas Lidzborski, the service’s chief security officer, said on the company’s blog.
It seems that Google has finally realized that it doesn't make sense to allow unencrypted HTTP connections.
"Our commitment to the security and reliability of your email is absolute, and we are constantly trying to find ways to improve it."
The question is of course who will protect us from Google itself, as the company's tracking practices are already known and have caused various reactions so far. It would be good to recall the fact that Google scans every email in order to present the appropriate advertisements to its users.
Apart from the latter, the company's move gives us a sense of security, but you never know where the secret services will end up. It would be utopian to believe that after the scandal, the surveillance will stop.
