The University of North Dakota in the US was hit by a hacking attack last February, which was only disclosed a few days ago. The attack resulted in the breach of a university server containing personal information of more than 290,000 students.
The university estimates that hackers had gained unauthorized access to the server since October 2013. The server contained information about 291,465 students, as well as social security numbers and other personal information of faculty and staff members.
After conducting forensic analysis, researchers found no evidence that the attackers stole sensitive information. The attack may have served other purposes, and the hackers likely aimed to exploit the server's processing power to launch attacks on other computers and systems.
The university has notified students of the breach and is proactively providing free identity theft protection services to affected users for one year.
