Female dominance is observed on social media in the US, according to research published on Financesonline.com, which cites data from sources such as the Pew Research Center and Burst Media.

As reported, statistics indicate that American women not only use social networks more often than men, but they do so in more ways. A large percentage of women use the top social media sites, while they dominate the “visual” networks, which are the fastest growing category. The most typical case is Pinterest, which is accessed by 33% of women who are online, while the corresponding percentage for men is 8%.

Women also seem to be leading the way in accessing social media via mobile devices. 46% of women use their smartphones to check their accounts, compared to 43% of men. Also, on tablets, the figures are 32% versus 20%.

Furthermore, women interact with brands more often, and for a wider range of reasons, while they "consume" and share news on social networks more often than men, who appear to focus on news and sports websites.

Specifically, the percentages of adult Internet users in the US who use the top social media are as follows:

  • Facebook: 76% for women, 66% for men
  • Tumblr: 54%, 46%
  • Pinterest: 33%, 8%
  • Instagram: 20%, 15%
  • Twitter: 18%, 17%
  • LinkedIn: 19%, 24% (higher percentage for men)

Women also appear to be on social media more often than men, as 30% use social networks "several" times a day, compared to 26% of men.

When it comes to interacting with brands on social media, 54% of women do it for support (44% for men), 53% for offers (36% for men), 39% for general information (33% for men) and 28% for comments (25% for men).

On "visual" social media, they are much more popular with women than with men, as on Tumblr the percentages are 54% versus 46%, on Pinterest 33% versus 8% and on Instagram 20% versus 15%.
