Authorities have been alarmed by a new way that fraudsters are using technology to "skim" accounts through ATMs. They are placing malicious software on ATMs using the machines' USB port and trapping it.
This allows them to spy on their content online and discreetly remove high-value banknotes without being noticed. At the same time, they close the “holes” of the security gap, making it difficult to detect the loss of money and their physical identity. The “bleeding” is done with the physical presence of the perpetrators in front of the ATMs.
The revelation was made in Germany where bank officials, whose name was not disclosed, suspected that something was wrong with the ATM machine of one of its branches. The particular machine was emptying at a faster rate than usual but they did not detect any (apparent) malfunction in the system or any interference with the machine itself.
Finally, after monitoring the security cameras, they discovered that someone was "emptying" the ATM using a simple USB flash drive like the ones we all use every day to store and transfer files.
