The 3D printing company 3D Systems and the toy giant Hasbro announced the start of their collaboration, with the aim of developing new, "creative play experiences" through 3D printing technology for children and their families.

According to the relevant announcement, this partnership combines Hasbro's world-renowned consumer brand portfolio and its knowledge in the space with 3D Systems' 3D printing products, platforms and devices, "to establish new and innovative games and creative experiences at home and online.".

“We believe 3D printing offers endless possibilities for creating new play experiences for children, and we are excited to partner with 3D Systems, an industry leader,” said Hasbro Chairman and CEO Brian Goldner.

Hasbro is not the first toy company to make moves in the field of 3D printing and advanced technology in general: Disney has developed software to convert animated characters into 3D printed mechanical toys, while British startup MakieLab has made a dynamic entry into the space with Makies dolls, which children design themselves, via a website or app, before their parents proceed with an order.

However, there are also those who have reservations: according to a Wall Street Journal report in June, Mattel, although it widely uses 3D printing technology to manufacture products, is "setting limits" on selling software that would allow consumers to print their own toys on low-cost 3D printers, for safety reasons.
