When Facebook announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2013, we learned that its total monthly active users exceeded 1.23 billion. The number in itself is huge compared to other social media, and it is of great interest to know how many of these users are real profiles and not fake ones.
According to annual Form 10-K report , we learn that overall fake accounts range between 5.5% and 11.2%, or between 67,650,000 and 137,760,000. If you take the lower value, you'll notice that this is an enviable number, one that many social media platforms would envy. And we're talking about fake profiles.
More specifically, between 4.3% and 7.9%are those profiles that concern duplicate accounts, for users for whom one profile is not enough. Also, between 0.8% and 2.1%are those profiles that concern incorrect accounts, for users who created profiles for a business or for an animal. Finally, between 0.4% and 1.2%are those profiles that concern unwanted accounts, for users who create profiles with the aim of violating Facebook's terms of use, e.g. for spam.
