Anthropic and Samsung in talks to build custom AI chip

Anthropic appears to be seriously exploring the possibility of developing a specialized artificial intelligence processor , opening a circle of contacts with Samsung Electronics . According to information, the two companies are in initial discussions regarding the possible construction of a custom AI chip, without however , a final decision on the implementation of the project having been made.

The project is still in its preliminary stages, as the processor's technical specifications, its role in Anthropic's infrastructure, or how it will be used in the data centers . In fact, it is possible that the project may never proceed to production if technical or financial conditions do not make it viable.

Anthropic's diversification strategy

In response to questions, Anthropic stressed that its strategy continues to be based on a diversified ecosystem of computing power. The company already leverages processors from Google, Amazon and Nvidia, choosing not to rely solely on a single hardware vendor.

This approach is particularly important at a time when demand for computing resources is increasing at an unprecedented rate. Large language models require more and more processing power both for training and for real-time operation, which is pushing companies to seek more efficient and cost-effective solutions.

Samsung's role in the AI chip market

Samsung is already a major player in the global semiconductor supply chain. The company works closely with Nvidia, participating in the manufacture of advanced processors used for training and inferring artificial intelligence models.

At the same time, the two giants are jointly investing in the creation of new AI chip production facilities in South Korea, confirming that the battle of artificial intelligence is no longer just about software, but also about developing stronger hardware infrastructure. For Samsung, a potential partnership with Anthropic would further strengthen its position against international competition.

The shift to proprietary chips is becoming a trend

This information complements previous reports that suggested that Anthropic was considering developing its own processors as early as the beginning of the year, as the needs of the Claude model were growing faster than the available supply of computing resources.

Another element that reinforces these scenarios is the hiring of Clive Chan, an executive with significant experience in designing specialized AI chips and participation in the corresponding program at OpenAI. This move shows that Anthropic is no longer limited to theoretical studies, but is more actively considering building its own expertise in the semiconductor field.

Nvidia is gaining strong competitors

The AI chip market is changing rapidly. OpenAI recently introduced its first dedicated inference, developed in partnership with Broadcom, in an effort to reduce its reliance on Nvidia.

At the same time, Google has its TPU units, while Amazon is investing heavily in its Trainium and Inferentia series for AWS services. Anthropic is already leveraging these different platforms, which allows it to more efficiently distribute its computational loads and maintain greater flexibility in its infrastructure .

Hardware evolves into the new competitive landscape

Anthropic 's impressive revenue growth makes it financially attractive to invest in custom silicon. While the company already has long-term deals for significant computing power through partnerships with Google and Broadcom, developing its own processors could give it greater control over cost, performance, and future evolution of its models.

It remains unknown whether Samsung will ultimately be the manufacturer to take on this project or whether Anthropic will choose a different partner. However, the overall message from the market is now clear: leading AI companies are increasingly investing in designing their own processors, attempting to reduce their dependence on Nvidia and gain a strategic advantage in the next phase of the AI revolution.
