Amazon Kuiper: Enough satellites to compete with Starlink

Amazon Kuiper has reached a critical milestone: Amazon announced that it now has enough satellites inlow-Earth orbit (LEO) to provide continuous coverage at initial latitudes. With the latest launch, Amazon Kuiper has 396 satellites in operation — a number that, according to Chris Weber, the program’s vice president of business and products, is “sufficient to support continuous service at initial latitudes.” The company remains on target for commercial availability in 2026, but early adopters should temper their expectations.

Amazon Kuiper is Amazon ’s most ambitious answer to SpaceX ’s dominant Starlink . The program officially began public deployment in 2023 , with test satellites confirming the network’s technical capabilities. The ultimate goal is to deploy 3,232 satellites in orbit, a plan that has been approved by the U.S. telecommunications regulator FCC . However, the program is behind schedule, in part due to delays in the development of the reusable New Glenn rocket from Blue Origin , Jeff Bezos ’ space company .

The comparison to Starlink is both inevitable and revealing. SpaceX launched its service in its “Better than nothing beta” in October 2020, when it had nearly 900 satellites in orbit. At the time, coverage was limited to a narrow range of users in northern Canada and the northern United States, with frequent service outages, speeds between 50 Mbps and 150 Mbps , and latencyof20ms to 40ms. By 2022, the service had improved dramatically — a lesson that Amazon Kuiper can learn from.

Amazon Kuiper vs Starlink: The technical comparison

Today, Starlink operates with more than 10,000 satellites in orbit, providing connectivity to over 160 countries — on land, at sea, and in the air. Performance varies depending on dish type, subscription level, time of day, and user location. However, average download speeds are now 200 Mbps , upload speeds range from 10 Mbps to 40 Mbps , and latency is maintained at around 25ms . It will take years for Amazon Kuiper to reach similar levels of performance.

Amazon Kuiper has some competitive advantages that should not be underestimated. Amazon has a huge infrastructure through AWS (Amazon Web Services), which can be leveraged to manage the ground networkandprovide low-latency services to enterprise customers. In addition, the company has already announced partnerships with telecommunications providers and government agencies, which suggests that its strategy is not aimed exclusively at the consumer, but also at the business-to-business (B2B) sector.

Amazon Kuiper: Challenges and prospects for the future

One of the biggest hurdles for Amazon Kuiper remains its reliance on Blue Origin 's New Glenn rocket . New Glenn is a reusable launch vehicle that has suffered significant delays in its development, increasing costs and slowing the pace of satellite constellation development. Amazon has also contracted with other launch providers, such as United Launch Alliance (ULA) and Arianespace , to diversify its options and accelerate launches.

For the first users of Amazon Kuiper, the experience will be much like that of the first Starlink in 2020: limited geographic coverage, potential service outages, and performance that won’t reflect the network’s ultimate potential. However, each new satellite launch will gradually improve performance, increase capacity, and expand global coverage. The satellite internet is expected to be worth tens of billions of dollars in the coming years, and Amazon doesn’t plan to be left out.

Amazon Kuiper ’s entry into the market is also important for European users, including Greece, where satellite connectivity is often the only option for remote areas and islands. The competition between Starlink and Amazon Kuiper is expected to lead to lower prices and better services for end users. The company is on track for its commercial launch, but the road to reaching the level of Starlink will be long and challenging.
