Twitter, Facebook, Google collaborate to “reform surveillance methods”
Eight tech giants, including Google, Apple, Facebook and Twitter, have sent an open letter to Obama calling for reforms to surveillance laws following revelations by former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden
“The revelations made over the summer have highlighted the urgent need for reform in government surveillance practices worldwide,” write AOL, Apple, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Yahoo! and Twitter.
“The scales in many countries have tipped too much in favor of the state at the expense of individual rights, rights enshrined in our Constitution. This weakens the freedoms we enjoy. It is time for this to change,” they emphasize.
The eight signatories to the letter “call on the US to take the lead and begin reforms so that US government surveillance operations are clearly defined by law, proportionate to the risks, and transparent.”.
“Recent revelations about government surveillance activities have shaken the trust of our users,” explains Yahoo! President Marissa Mayer.
"It is time for the U.S. government to restore the trust of our users, and it is time to take steps to restore the trust of citizens around the world.".
