Apple Maps: No ads yet, but they're coming soon

Apple has released iOS 26.5 , adding a new “ Suggested Places ” feature to the Apple Maps app . This feature appears to be a precursor to the ads that Apple plans to start showing later this year. There has been some confusion about whether they are active, but for now, the Apple Maps app does not include ads .

The company began laying the groundwork for ads and tested a splash screen, but no ads appeared during the beta testing period or after launch.

Apple Maps: When are ads coming and how will they appear?

When Apple announced plans to introduce ads to the Maps app in March, it said they would appear in the United States and Canada “this summer.” “Astronomical summer” in the Northern Hemisphere starts on June 21 and ends on September 22. Meteorologically, summer begins on June 1 and lasts until August. So we could see this feature sometime between June 1 and September 22, depending on how Apple defines summer.

The ads will appear in Apple Maps search results and in the new Suggested Places section, which shows suggestions based on what's popular near users' area and based on the user's recent searches.

The ads will reportedly be available in the iPhone and iPad app, and will be visible with the “Ad” label, similar to how ads appear in App Store search results. Businesses will bid on the Apple account, and the highest bid for a keyword or search term will secure its ad in the search results.

Apple states that location data and ads users see in the Maps app are not linked to an Apple account , and the data is not shared with third parties. There is no opt-out option for location-based ads or personalized ads in Suggested Places.

Change of strategy for Apple

The imminent introduction of ads to Apple Maps marks a significant shift in Apple's strategy, which has until now strongly promoted privacy and a "clean" user experience as key advantages of its services. Although the company assures that location data will not be linked to user accounts or shared with third parties, the addition of advertising content to such a basic application is expected to spark discussions about the limits of personalization and commercial exploitation of data.

At the same time, the new “Suggested Places” feature shows that Apple is looking to strengthen Maps’ competitiveness against services like Google Maps, while also creating a new revenue stream through targeted business views. Time will tell whether users will accept this transition, especially in an era where the balance between convenience, personalization, and privacy is at the center of the tech conversation.
