It's been over two years since we started hearing reports of AirPods with cameras, and the latest information suggests we're getting relatively close to their release.

There are conflicting reports about the purpose of the cameras, but Bloomberg suggests they are intended to support Apple's intelligence features.
The first reports of AirPods with cameras date back to 2024, initially presented as something Apple was exploring, although later reports have suggested it's a definitive plan.
There’s still no consensus on the purpose of these cameras, with three possibilities being mentioned. However, the latest Bloomberg report directly points to the idea of allowing users to ask questions about an object they might be looking at. For example, they could look at food ingredients and ask what to cook for dinner. It’s a similar experience to what one gets from posting photos to AI services like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or the iPhone’s Visual Intelligence feature
Apple has consistently tried to give its own in-ear headphones unique selling points over third-party products, most notably a much smoother pairing process with Apple devices. The company has also significantly improved the sound quality of the AirPods Pro in particular, in order to win over users who have purchased competing products for better sound quality. If this feature really works well, it could be time for some users to make the switch.

The navigation features mentioned in the piece are a good example. Historically, there’s been a big gap between how maps apps offer turn-by-turn navigation and how people expect to get directions. If cameras could allow Apple Maps to provide more human-like directions, that would already be a significant benefit.
Another interesting possibility is that the device could give the user reminders based on something the camera sees. For example, if a user has created a shopping list in the Notes, it would be awesome if the AirPods cameras could see that they've entered a grocery store and use that information to proactively open the list on their iPhone.
Similarly, if a user has a scheduled book purchase saved in a third-party book app, iOS could display that reminder when it sees them approaching a bookstore. Or, if they have an oil change on their reminders, AirPods could alert them when they see a service center while driving, but only if they can see from their calendar that they have time for the stop.
This type of reminder feature could be extremely useful, and could be the feature that will lead some users to sacrifice some level of audio quality for the benefits.

However, given the launch of Apple Intelligence features to date, there is skepticism about how realistic these ideas can be. While a few minimal features may launch the idea, it would be surprising to see a full suite of visual intelligence-driven reminder features within the next year or two.
