The US military plans to integrate software into its computer network to monitor the online behavior of its employees, with the aim of avoiding "new Snowden cases".
According to a report by National Defense Magazine, Army Network 2020, which is expected to be operational within a few years, will include behavioral analysis routines that will be able to identify unwanted "anomalies" in the online behavior of military personnel.
As Brigadier General Alan Lin, deputy director of the Defense Information Systems Agency, told National Defense Magazine, “it will monitor your patterns and how you operate. If you go to X number of websites, it records that. If you send so many emails, it records that. If now you change your behavior and start doing something completely different, go to a separate site or an internal website and start downloading a lot of data,” then, according to the brigadier general, security personnel will be notified.
The system will also be able to detect when a computer has been "taken over" by malware, he added.
According to Charles Croom, vice president of cybersecurity solutions at Lockheed Martin, while it is impossible to monitor all data traffic on a network, the military and defense companies could increase monitoring of employees who are either new to a field or about to leave, as these are considered the two categories most likely to reveal corporate or government secrets.
Asked by Mashable whether the claims in the report were true, Matthew Burke, a spokesman for the US Army, said that “beyond saying that the Army’s intelligence agencies comply with orders and directives requesting network monitoring, we cannot disclose specifics about these efforts.” It is worth noting that last November, President Obama signed a presidential memorandum that provided instructions and guidance for the development of programs aimed at “detecting, deterring, and mitigating employee actions that pose a risk to national security.”.
