A 28-year-old hacker from Chicago, who is allegedly associated with the Anonymous organization, was sentenced to ten years in prison on Friday.
The 28-year-old was accused of committing cyber attacks on various government agencies and private businesses, including a global intelligence company.
Jeremy Hammond was sentenced to this prison term after admitting in May that he "intruded" on the company Strategic Forecasting Inc, or Stratfor, in December 2011, an action that was driven, according to his lawyers, by his concerns about the role of private companies in intelligence gathering within the US and abroad.
The prosecution had claimed that his "invasion" of Stratfor, which is based in Austin, Texas, resulted in the theft of 60,000 credit card numbers and the details of 860,000 customers, which were then posted online.
