UK gains access to target networks through fake Linkedin pages

The British intelligence agency GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters) is allegedly deceiving employees of mobile phone companies and billing companies through fake Linkedin and Slashdot pages in order to gain access to their network.

The news was initially reported by the German magazine Der Spiegel, based on classified GCHQ documents leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.

The first known attack partially targeted the state-owned Belgian telecommunications company Belgacom.

When employees visited the fake pages, they secretly installed malware on the victim's system, which acted as a backdoor and gave unauthorized access to Belgacom's internal networks and the passwords of its subsidiary BICS. The goal was to gain access to the GRX Router system operated by BICS in order to monitor telephone communications.
