Facebook is becoming increasingly active in everything related to wireless networks as the company's plan to spread the Internet around the world evolves.
According to information, the company has joined the GSM Association (GSMA), a body consisting of telecommunications providers and other technology partners, who work together to establish the standard and promote the GSM cellular mobile communication worldwide.
Although Facebook has not directly invested in mobile networks, it seems interested in playing a significant role in their development, as part of the spread of Internet.org, an organization founded in August to bring the Internet to as many people worldwide as possible.
“Understanding the issues facing providers (and the industry as a whole) is not only important to Facebook but also to Internet.org’s efforts,” a company spokesperson said.
The ultimate goal of the American social networking company is of course to increase the number of customers for its service. With the use of social networks increasingly moving to smartphones, both the company's interest and its membership in the GSMA are expected.
As Facebook's vice president, Dan Rose, , "joining the GSMA reflects our focus on the mobile market as well as our continued desire to work closely with industry partners and look forward to an active role in the future."
