Google is working on a native Gemini app for Mac, Bloomberg reports. Currently, Mac users who want to use the AI chatbot must do so through a web browser, but that will change with the development of a dedicated Mac app.
Google's competitors, such as Anthropic and OpenAI, have already developed Mac-specific apps for their chatbots. This means that Claude and ChatGPT are probably more convenient to use.

Gemini for Mac: Beta testing
Google shared an early version of the app with beta testers to get feedback. However, it’s unclear when it will be officially released. Google hasn’t provided any information on a release date for the Mac app, and testers were told that the app only has “basic features,” suggesting that there will be more additions before the final release.
The app is said to resemble its iPhone and iPad counterparts. It has the ability to search the web, analyze uploaded documents, and maintain a chat history. Google is asking users to try out content creation tools for images, tables and charts, videos, music , and more, as well as provide feedback on math questions and information analysis.

Gemini for Mac will be able to integrate with other Mac applications through a Desktop Intelligence, mirroring functionality available with tools like Claude Cowork. The AI system will be able to read the Mac screen, using the content to personalize Gemini and allow the AI to complete tasks.
Bloomberg reports that the Mac app includes wording about how Desktop Intelligence works. “When you enable apps for Desktop Intelligence, you allow Gemini to see what you see (like what’s on your screen) and pull content directly from those apps to improve and personalize your experience only when they’re in use,” the app’s code states.
Overall, the development of a native Mac app clearly demonstrates Google’s intent to strengthen its position in the rapidly evolving space of artificial intelligence. Until now, the lack of a standalone app has been a disadvantage compared to the competition, but this new effort promises a more complete and immediate user experience. Although the app is still in the testing phase and has basic functionality, the capabilities described – such as document analysis, content creation and system integration – portend a powerful tool for Mac users.
