A student from the University of Twente claims that he has developed a new optical storage medium that is indestructible and has a lifespan of up to 1 billion years!
Essentially, it is a large QR code disc, where each QR code consists of individual QR pixels that are etched onto tungsten and then covered with silicon nitride. In order to determine the disc's lifespan, Jeroen de Vries “cooked” the disc in an oven at 200+ degrees Celsius for an hour.
According to research, this corresponds to 1 million years of lifespan at normal temperatures and indeed the data remained intact. Subsequently, the disc was tested at even higher temperatures and the tests showed that it can last up to 1 billion years.
