Researchers develop “undersea Internet”

Researchers develop "undersea Internet"Researchers at the University at Buffaloare developing an underwater computer network that could lead to developments such as tsunami detection, offshore oil drilling, and pollution monitoring.

The “unified underwater wireless network ” promises to offer groundbreaking data collection and analysis capabilities

As Tommaso Melodia, associate professor of Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering and lead researcher of the scientific project, states, “The analysis of the data will be done in real time. Making this information available to anyone with a smartphone or computer, especially in the event of a tsunami or other type of disaster, can save lives.”

Very importantly, there will be communication with all underwater systems around the world, solving the problem of incompatibility that existed until now between different systems and thus creating an “underwater Internet”.

This underwater network, according to the professor, could also help monitor illegal maritime activities, such as drug smuggling and marine pollution.
