Samsung's foldable display without a crease may use more ultra-thin glass

The display crease has been a sticking point on Samsung's foldable Galaxy phones for years, but the company recently unveiled a new technology that appears to address this issue. According to a report, a key element of this advancement is a second layer of ultra-thin glass.

At CES 2026 earlier this month, the company showcased a new foldable display technology called “Advanced Crease-less.” Although the new panel was quickly removed, it showed a significant improvement in the display crease compared to the technology currently used in the Galaxy Z Fold 7. There is speculation that this technology could debut with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 or even in Apple’s iPhone Fold.

A leak reported that Samsung is “thinning” the back plate by introducing perforated holes that allow for flexibility and distribute the pressure of folding across the entire screen, rather than concentrating it in the center like the current design does.

A Korean publication added to this explanation, stating that Samsung will use a laser-drilling process on the back plate to disperse the pressure. Additionally, the new technology may include a secondary sheet of ultra-thin glass (UTG).

Currently, Samsung uses ultra-thin glass under a plastic protective layer on devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 7, with the display underneath the glass and the back plate behind it. To further protect against “creases” in the display, the company is reportedly considering using a second layer of ultra-thin glass on top of the back plate.

It remains unclear whether this second layer was part of the panel the company showed off in Las Vegas earlier this month, but it certainly seems like an interesting solution. The addition of ultra-thin glass to Samsung's foldables has already improved screen uniformity compared to the first generation, suggesting that this new structure could lead to further improvements.
