American scientists aspire to solve a chronic problem related to analyzing earthquake data in real time with the help of smartphones.
According to an article in a scientific journal of the American Seismological Society, the accelerometers (MEMS) found in smartphones are probably the answer to the problem of obtaining reliable data in real time.
MEMS have the ability to detect earthquakes of magnitude 5 and above if they are located near the epicenter of the earthquake.
Due to their widespread use, scientists believe that an “urban anti-seismic network” could be created through future smart devices that would in turn send seismic data in real time to the authorities.
An example is the Stanford University earthquake detection network, where seismographs are connected to volunteer computers.
Thanks to the rapid development of technology and the low cost of smartphones, scientists hope that their idea will be realized in a short time.
